Notary FAQ

Notary questions we hear most often

What is a Notary Public and what can they do?+

A Notary Public is authorized under Alberta's Notaries and Commissioners Act to administer oaths, take affidavits and statutory declarations, certify true copies of documents, and notarize signatures for use in Canada and abroad.

What's the difference between a Notary Public and a Commissioner for Oaths?+

A Commissioner for Oaths can administer oaths and take affidavits for use within Alberta. A Notary Public can do everything a Commissioner can, plus certify true copies of documents and notarize signatures for use outside Alberta — including internationally.

Do I need to book an appointment?+

Yes — notarial services are by appointment so we can confirm the correct documents, your identification, and the right form of notarization for your purpose.

What should I bring to my appointment?+

Bring the original document(s) you need notarized, any related instructions from the requesting party, and valid government-issued photo identification (driver's licence, passport, or provincial ID). Do not sign the document beforehand — most notarizations require you to sign in front of the notary.

Can you notarize documents for use outside Canada?+

Yes. We notarize signatures and certify true copies for documents being used internationally. Some countries also require authentication or an apostille after notarization — we can explain the next steps for your destination country.

Need a document notarized?

Book an appointment and we'll confirm what to bring, the right form of notarization, and any follow-up steps if your document is going overseas.
